I have a question to put to the experts..... In my last vehicle I had a four way system.....it seemed to work well even though I know it was not set up perfectly.....Thinking about it for my current set up......Here is what I am gonna have, with no changes made..... Frt. stage.... Infinity Reference separates....6.5 mid with tweeter....This will be powered off of my Blaupunkt amp....it is a 4 channel V450 velocity series....I am gonna bridge it down to two channel which will give me 150 rms x 2.... Rear stage...Infinity reference 4x6.....these will be powered from HU basically will just be fill Sub....JL audio Old school 10w6....This is a 6 ohm DVC paralleled to 3 ohm load....it is gonna be powered by my Kenwood KAC 9152D amp.... I have thought about adding a pair of 8" subs up front (or rear) and have them run as the third driver per side along with the Infinity's..... Here is my dilemma as I see it (unless I don't do it).....I would need to make my 6.5 Infinity's be band-passed, so the lows would be handled by the 8"...I would need to keep those 8" crossed over to be between my 10" sub and the 6.5 Infinity.....I also wonder what problems I may encounter by putting a third speaker in a "system" of two speakers that were designed to work as a system..... Any thoughts on this type of thing....Will it give me better mid bass and bass and leave the sub to handle the rest.....I would think that if the 8" were running in the 80/100-200/250 hz range and the sub handling the 80/100 and down range....that would give the 6.5" the range of 250-3500hz with the tweet getting the highs.... Is this something that could be a nightmare? Do you think the Infinity's can really do a good job with the 80-200 hz range?? opinions???? Willy
Hmmm, i say your gunna have a challenging time tryin to make it sound good. It CAN be done, but is VERY time consuming. You already seem to know about the potential phasing issues, So as long as you fully understand that, and know how to listen to a system, you can do it. Now me, i prefer the more basic 3 way sytem tweets, mid-bass and subs. Will usually, sound better. If you are looking for the mid bass punch that is in tune with what a tom or snare can produce, maybe look into putting some SERIOUS power into the highs, or even using an 8 in place of the 6. An 8 inch driver on axis to the listening "area' can reproduce some nice midrange, but only effectively up to around 1.5 Khz if i remember right....A 6 incher will generally do a much more accurate job of those criticval frequencies however. IF you want to try a 4 way system, go for it. I have done several over the years with mixed results. The customers were happy with all of them, but i am very critical and a fw of them I could never spend enough time on to get dialed in "just right" , heck, they may never have been capable of getting tuned in properly...... Be careful of overlapping frequencies, as a matter of fact, you want your x-over points anywhere from half to one full octave apart in the lower end, depending on slopes and postitions of the speakers, generally speaking......Electronic x-overs are easy to do this with and make adjustments.....passives, much more time consuming and can be frustrating to those not familiar with them. Might think about a 4 way active x-over that has phasing adjustments. But again, i must say this, be sure the mid bass has plenty of power, isay at least as much as the subs.
I believe I am gonna just leave well enough alone....My truck sounds damn good right now with HU driving factory speakers...I should be able to get really good results with the Infinity's and my sub..... Thanks Willy
