you could always just do 1 12 in a 4th order. those type of boxes are efficient and 1k to 1 12 in that type of box can and will surprise you.

look for any wire loom running thru the firewall and see if you can stick a wire thru its grommet. i used my steering column's grommet.
does your amp HAVE a subsonic filter? if not then just set it to lpf and set it to roughly 80hz and turn it down from there until it sounds good...
how old is old? you dont want to buy an old sub only to have it crap out on you later due to its age. i say buy a decent new sub for the money...
if its to specs, you dont need anything in the box.
with a $115 diff in price for 500 more watts i would do the 3000's. an extra 500 per sub might not make a big diff.
