Has anyone put a sub where the rear factory speakers are? In other words, the trunk would become a 12 cu. ft. enclosure! Obviously it's not mdf but wouldn't it still be good? That way you could use a smaller sub 12" , 10" , maybe 8" and it would give you some really deep frequencies and some good sounding bass. Am I wrong?

How would you accurately tune it? or accurately measure the volume? 12cu. ft sealed just wont work in my opinion..

Yea it would have to be sealed. And I know it's 12 cubic feet cuz that's what my manual says the cargo space is in the trunk lol

so you think I couldn't pull something decent off?

    Been done countless times......

It is essentially an infinite baffle system. The woofer will be operating in free air. As if not box was bahind it. This type of set up requires the utmost in sealing the cabin from the trunk. It works very good actually. Transient response is good, lower octaves do a fine job and you dont eat up all your trunk with a box. You MUST use a driver with suitable parameters for this to work or you will launch it into next week due to its mechanical limitations being exceeded. I have done many custom jobs using this technique to the extreme. Never had a dissatified customer. As for a driver suggestion...I have none, dont know who makes a good infinite baffle speaker anymore. But basically if you run a box program (sealed) and enter the volume as say.....12 cubic feet it will give you a rough idea. Look for excursion limits and at what frequncy and power they are exceeded.

I agree with VIKING, i have done these installs myself. But if not done properly
you will have a rattletrap. I like boxes with the ports going through where the
factory spks are/was located v.s that, just sounds better in my opinion.
less enclosure flex = more spl, better sq.

Thanks for the replies guys I'm glad this is something that has been done and can work out great. I'm just wondering if I will be able to pick up 20Hz with this system. 12 cu ft sealed with 2 10s, 1 10, and maybe just maybe 1 or 2 12s but that's pushing it. My last system would pick up the sounds but it would be at a very low volume and it annoyed me. I had the box tuned to high. Realised I'm obsessed with super low frequencies with large excursions lol

I remember seeing a lot of infinite baffle designed subs back in the 90's. strange they don't seem to advertise such anymore that i've seen or show it listed as an enclosure type but like Viking said, you'll probably have to look at parameters and find the right one or Ebay search for some older subs that were designed just for that use.
I'm surprised its not a prevalent thing to use these days, especially with todays small cars.

I tried looking for a program but all I'm getting are things that calculate volume. I can't get anything that helps me. I did google infinite baffle and found some good information. Nothing on the type of speakers to use though. Still looking...

UPDATE: I found out that I need speakers with a Qts of .6 or greater... Also, is this going to ruin the punchyness of the bass? Will it not be as punchy if I try to pick up those extra low frequencies? Maybe I can do a punchy bass up in the front dash somewhere by the passangers feet or something to make sure I'm still getting that punch like someone is pounding on your chest???

Kind of at a stand still. How do I search for speakers with a high Qts and Vas?

Idk that one for home audio looks cheap. If I'm paying that much for a sub it better be good. The second one I can't really see but I think that one is better.

A concern though since it will be right next to the window and basically facing the window, will this shatter my window? Is the SPL going to break my rear window into a million pieces?> lol... but seriously...

Kicker used to make some good freeair subwoofers. I don't know if they still do or not. I once had two 8"s and a 10" in an infinite baffle configuration on a Plymouth Neon, and it sounded nice, and looked killer for how easy it was to install. Just cut a baffle board, wrap with carpet, throw a few screws to it, and mount subs. Takes up almost zero room in the trunk, and sounds good. Granted, you won't win any SPL competitions with it, but it still provides adequate bass for most "average" folks. At least my setup did.

Also, check out FI Audio's website. They claim to have some infinite baffle subs (the IB3 models), but when you click the link, it shows nothing. At least on my computer it shows nothing. You could certainly contact them, however, if you are interested.
