    I bought one at best buy, has a male 3.5mm jack on one end and on the other end is 2 RCA jacks, plugs into your amp and ipod, you use the volume...

    Should I or should I not use my pre-out for my subwoofer?

    Id use the pre out, RCA's are generally better quality vs a high input like you had spliced in I personally like RCA's better, but its up to you.

    no ground wire

    A Factory bolt is never a good ground Your better off using a non-factory ground (drill, sand off paint then nut and bolt)
