Nothing like the mechanical mind, so what made you leave car audio? I know why I wanna leave. I'm tired of keeping up with the changing technology. The owner is still livivg in the 90's. He can not understand that there is no ignition line behind the radio's of new cars. Its like pulling teeth to get me a data interface to do the door locks on some vehicles. (it either that or 2 relays in each door. ex. 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee with multiplex door locks or the 05 and up Trailblazers). Or how about the 94-96 Hondas with factory keyless, if you pull the factory radio the keyless and the domelights quit working. It don't take long to get tired. I graduate in 2008, I can't wait.
Teach High School level mathematics. I sucked at math at your age so I have a unique perspective of why it is so difficult to understand. Many kids do not see the practical applications of mathematics, most see it as an abstact concept that they have to learn in school. Even on this site, people here have no clue. They think that Speaker A is better than Speaker B based soley on brand. They are oblivious to the fact that physics and mathematics play a strong role. I did not get to over 162dB by guessing, it was a simple mathematical process (which you have seen). And if I had not made a simple miscalculation, I might have gotten to my target. ( near 170) Oh Well
I can understand that Ranger. Then again, that is my bread and butter. The changing technology is what keeps me in the game I am in. I am fortunate that I have a shop owner that believes in training. Tool purchases are a whole nuther ballgame, but that is a whole different subject. I am getting to the age that doing the heavy stuff is too much, so in order to keep this body in some kind of working order for the later years, I had to focus on the thinking part of the repair side, and step away from pulling engines, and crap like that. A shame though. Always a shame to see a dedicated person to any trade driven out by shortsightedness and stupidity of the people in charge.
Keeping up with changing technology will be the key in any industry. The mechanics of the future will be much more than parts changers. Funny story, I loaned my Tech2 to a freind who owns a 57 Chevy, with an 02 Camaro 350. Anyway the owner had sceduled a cruise control on an 07 Pontiac G5. I installed the cruise and informed the dealer that they had to reprogram the BCM. The dealership must have called us a couple of times because they were unable to flash the BCM. Their mechanic told them that it was not possible to reflash the BCM. Apparently the mechanics could not figure out how to get past the "BCM Locked" part. To make a long story short, I drove to the dealership, informed the mechanic he was a complete idiot and reflashed the BCM. The service manager was not thrilled about my attitude and called the owner of the shop I work at. Any way the owner won't get rid of me, I make him to much money. But after getting yelled at, I told him he could buy his own Tech2. Mine stays at home. Even if he got the shop a Tech2, I'm the only one who knows how to use it. I don't see that shop being around 5 or 6 more years unless he really starts looking at the technology and embracing it. Convincing him to carry Ipod interfaces was like pulling teeth. It took almost a year to convince him it was not a fad. I'm nearly 50, and I have no problem with technology. If I ever had to take any of my cars to a mechanic I would be scare to death. Something simple like the fan problem on my son's car was beyond the ability of most mechanics. You had no problem diagnosing and explaining the computer operation of the fan. OK now I'm just ranting
From deer to careers...........HA HA!!!!! the emerging technology of tommorrow is always amongst us. Those not willing to participate will fall behind and eventually fall out of the race. I for one am in a career that is on going in its training. But here lie my problem. I work in an outadated manufacturing facility that is teeetering on closure within the next 6 months. The training i have recieved to better service the current outdated equipment is NILL. 90% of every repair is made without any info, history, or even the correct parts to make an effective repair. We do have several "modern" peices of CNC equipment (circa 1990's) which is outdated in todays standerds. I have recieved NO training on the "guts" of these things. That along with NO pay raise in 4 years (plantwide) and a recent reduction of the plant workforce by 25%, Makes it REALLY HARD to give shyte about what i do....Alot of times I dont. A little duck tape and bailing wire is about all i put into it if you get my drift. You are right Ranger in what you did, the shop owner should NOT benefit from your knowledge and experience or tools if he is not willing to "help out". I myself have been in the same scenarios as you with dealerships. I personally left the car audio industry around late 96, due to the lack of pay, ( I made about 28,000 the last FULL year) .....Also got tired of the employer not providing insurance that ws worth a crap, and the fact that the installers we had and that i was training didnt want to learn cause they "knew it all"...... Well, that and i had a prime opurtunity to purchase 15 acres here where I now reside in SW Mo...... The technology thing is key in keeping up with the market, but dammit, it definatly AINT gettin easier!!!!!!!! Especially in the car audio world!
