I went to 6th ave todat to get my new tv and on the way I stopped at my installer to tell him what I had in mind for the system.

I told him I was getting a 12" IDMAX and not the 2 12" JL W3v2s that I originally planned. You should have seen how dissapointed he was. When I told him I was only gettting one 12 instead of 2 he was even more dissapointed. I told him that this is a quality and is better than the W3s but he told me that he wasnt too sure. I then asked him what he thought of Image Dynamics and he told me they were good and thats it. This is where it gets really funny.... He then proceeds to tell me that he doesnt know what the IDMAX is and has never heard it in his life. I laugh and ask how he can make judgements on my purchase when he has never seen or heard what the IDMAX can do.

Looks like another installer praising JL because thats all he comes across in 6th ave. :lmfao:

Do the W3v2s even compare with the IDMAX?

I hope I didnt get on his abd side b/c he still has to install my new system, move my amp back, and hopefully do some rewiring :lmfao: :lmfao:

W3V2s are nice, but they are not superwoofers. The IDMax is a badass, and I think you are making the right decision... If it were me and I had to choose, I would pick Brahma... oops :D , I mean IDMax too. :starwars: :starwars:

Yes, the Brahma is nice but I only have 800W to work with and I think the IDMAX will use that more efficiently. Isnt the RMS for the Brahma something like 1600W?

Mine will be getting ~900 per with the pair. You can use the enclosure to increase efficiency.

I was just kidding though, use the IDMax, it is a killer woofer, and 1 of the top 5 in the world IMHO...

Yea I agree, in the right box 800w would be plenty for a Brahma. However, the IDMAX is supposed to be more efficient than a Brahma (going by the numbers) and the RMS is lower anyways.

I also agree that the w3 is a great sub, but not on the level of the IDMAX. If you have a pair of w3's against a single IDMAX, then you'd probably be louder than the IDMAX, but if you weren't then that'd be pretty sad...

It really does amaze me how little the guys that work in the shops around here know.

The W3 is an expensive sub, I would rather just enjoy the MAX and after a while just get a second one if neccesary :2guns:

    B12
    13W7
    10W7
    TI Elite

I know there are some others that may deserve to be up there, but the fact that I haven't heard them makes me leave them off the list... They are:

B15, B10, Tumult, 12A, 15A, JBLGTi, Aura Elon, and a few others that are escaping me right now.

The XXX is a nice overall woofer, but I think that we may need to remember, it is an SPL design. To me, even though it has the motor of a superwoofer, the SPL design factor kind of eliminates it as a superwoofer (IMO of course).

    I disagree...
I would buy the XXX for a SQ application before an SPL application...
Well, SPL competition application anyway ;)
Remember, it's an XBL2 sub just like the Brahma... but larger scale motor, that's about it. The rest of the parts are basically the same.

The Eclipse Ti is a massive monster sub, and it's strong... it's an SPL sub that actually has some excursion though, IMO... it looks to be way overmotored, like a giant midbass driver. Oh well, it's pretty to look at for sure.. like my 10XXX here.. :p But I haven't heard it, so I can't say.

I've got a JBL GTi here, haven't powered it up yet...
Can't wait to get the system going in the Pathfinder! B)

To me, there's purebreed SPL subs, purist SQ subs...
and the nice crop of "super subs" out there... :starwars:
Brahma, XXX fall into that fun category, if for nothing other than the virtue of their great motors.
The W7 is one for sure.. not only almost as great of a motor, but a suspension and basket that leaves you drooling, and in awe watching it's unmatched excursion.
Well, the Eclipse Ti can probably throw about as far.. but the motor just seems to be more of the SPL variety.
The GTi for it's way overengineered motor, with it's high-priced implementation... oh well, it's theoretically accomplishing the same thing the Brahma is, with it's dual staggered gaps... just that the GTi also has two distinct voice coils operating on those gaps independently.
I like to include my PG Cyclone in the "super sub" category, because it has the low frequency extension that would make any audiophile drool, because nothing is as unique as a Cyclone, with it's rotary servo motor and lexan cylinder construction, and it's amazing efficiency due to the servo technology.

    Just my two cents!

    Interesting thread.

Wow geo, you described how I feel about the W7 exactly. Almost as good motor (Xbl2 has a couple advantages) but with a basket, spider, Sd, etc. to pull it on top IMO, unfortunately in cost as well as performance. Well maybe the cost isn't as outrageous as the TI.

The GTI is a pretty good design, but unfortuately it looks like they engineered it more for SPL than SQ. With a change in coil lengths and positioning, they could have had a killer SQ sub. But then I don't know if they could have pulled off the curves XBL2 and the W7 motor do.

The Max sounds nice, but I just can't get past it's design flaws. I suppose since we are talking SQ mainly, they shouldn't matter. So I guess it could be included on the top 5.

What I don't understand is if the ED subs are going to be in there, then why not Eclipses slightly lower end subs, or Audiomobile subs? They are very similar in design and performance from what I understand.

Yeah, and that is 1 reason I didn't mention them. Overpecker screwed alot of people. Besides, the undoctored Dumax looks like ass.

Have you heard the Ti Chris? It is very quick, and very punchy. It is actually a nice woofer. I felt it was too punchy, and really lacked low end overall (as you say, a big mid driver) but it was realy stunning regaurding transients. Like a 10W7 with less low end.

I thought about the cyclone as I responded too, but it is really a differant breed of sub, so I opted to exclude it.

hmmm i haven't heard the ti...but i thought that the 10w7 lacked a bit of low end...so if the ti lacks it even more...hmmm...i guess you gotta give a lil to take a lil...

but yeah, i like elemental subs, but if they're included in there, i feel like a lot of other subs should be too...i'm not sure that i'd put elemental near the top for sq....
