How does this happen? Do the sponsors hang out around car audio and car shows and pick whoever they find interesting? Or do you bang on the manuf doors until someone becomes interested? I see this happen or at least hear people bragging about this but when I tried to get some help from Alumapro with my sub set up (I think it is pretty awesome with 4 12's Alchemies and over 3000 watts) in a 98 3000GT VR4, they basically told me to beat it and offered to sell me replacement dust caps (I have 2 frosted silver drivers and 2 polished finish with polished caps)... I am just wondering how this sponsor car business works... do you have to suck their dic$s to have them help you? I am just getting sick and tired of people bragging how much free stuff and help they get for their crappy rides... Whassup with that?
It's rather like getting a job... What's on your resume? How many shows have you won? How responsible for your installation were you? How many show winning vehicles have you built? Have they been show-worthy, as well as sound-result worthy? And it helps to know someone who is in the industry... in many ways: They might help you get product less expensively, freeing up funds to take the install to the level it needs to be at. They might help you install, or tackle things you can't yourself. They might pass word on to someone who makes such sponsorship decisions. But it's not a matter of "sponsor me and I will build it and win with it" It's definitely a matter of "If I build it and win with it, I could get sponsored" Sponsorships are earned by people who would be doing it regardless of sponsorship, who are also capable of taking it to a show and competition winning level without sponsorship.
Well basically its a lot harder to get sponsored than most people think. A lot of companies have thier own cars which they build and goto shows with, so that way they can make the shows they want. A lot of companies dont really sponsor any more because whats the point when they can build their own cars and dont have to worry about someone showing up for a certain show. So whats the point of sponsoring soneone when they can afford their own cars and they can get the word out themselves. Now if your trying to get the job of the guy who build the show cars and takes them to the shows thats a differnt story and they arent really sponsoring you because its their car. Your more likely to get sponsored through a local shop rather than a company. Now some of the smaller companies that are trying to get the word out about them and are big enough buy their own cars or make all the comps are more likely to give out sponsorships. So basically if you do get sponsored it is more like a job you have to goto certain shows and do certain things. So it goes something like that....
yes, and no many many many many big manufactures still offer Sponsorships, Kicker is one of them, Just because they have Demo Cars dont mean a competitor sponsor is not good for business, it is far far keeps for each company to have a reginally sponsored compeititor then to have to have a Car for Each Regoin, and a Paid Rep to Drive that car.... And When you Agree to the Sponsorship there are certin thing YOU MUST do or you will A> Lose the Sponsorship B> have to pay for the Products given to you...

The best, even... IF IF IF.... and ONLY if... you have someone who will get out there, compete, post results, and end up getting coverage and/or some amount of fame from it! So it's a tough decision, sponsoring. You want someone to get out there... And not just get out there... actually DO something with your product. Coming in 2nd or 3rd... or "also finished" is not impressive.
LOL... lots of great (although sobering somewhat) input from everyone... I am not sure how it works where you guys are but to get sponsored by a local shop here, you have to spend a $hitload of money with the shop (including buying all equipment from them at retail) and pay top dollar for custom install and then you may be picked by them as a "show" vehicle... Well, @uck this route, LOL... The part that really bothers me is that all shows these days is more of the SEE than HEAR variety (glitzy fiberglass, flashing neons, etc...) Well, I am more of the stealthy install kind and really do not have anything to show because I think it is so much cooler to have everything look like it was factory made (helps not to get the unwanted attention from thieves)... So I guess the only thing to do is to attend contests (not that there are so many of them here in Nor Cal to begin with...) and treat this as another hobby... One thing I have to start doing though, I have to start printing my own bumper stickers disclosing certain manufacturers vices... I guess it will be a reverse sponsorship... LOL...
ther reason you see the "whowy" type cars getting the sponsor is because that is what SELLS products The manufacture whats 3 things from a Sponsor 1> a Nice Install that attacts attentions from the veiwing Public (showy) 2> Easyly acknolegable Brand name (stickers, or Custom Painted car with Brand on the side) 3> a Person Willing to "show off" the Products If you dont meet all of the of the above, your no use to the manufacturer so why should they give you products????? Same way with a Shop...... And as far as Sponsorships go, your missing the point You will not walk in off the street with no stereo and expect a shop to sponsor you many many many many of the sponsored people have YEARS and YEARS of installing Experance, and Have spend more money in Car audio in their lives than I have made in mine...............
I do not think I missed the point... Last time I had a "basic" install done, it was $3k in labor... I do not think this could be qualified as someone off the street... or is it? My point was that when I have a $12k audio system in a 98 3000GT VR4 car and try to match the finish on my Alchemy drivers and the manuf response is to offer to sell me at retail new dust caps gets me thinking how this whole thing works... I guess at least Alumapro does not give a flying about spreading a good word around... They certainly get a high recommendation from me...
