I want to start shooting. I was wondering what goes into obtaining a shooting permit in the state of NJ. Does it cost a lot of money? How about some pistol reccomendations too...

Would a desert eagle be too much for me to handle, especially as a first gun. Im really just throwing things into the air. I dont even know how much one would cost.

Have you ever shot anything? I reccomend learning how to shoot a rifle or shotgun first. Take your state's big game hunting course, and learn about gun safety. The biggest problem with guns nowadays is simply that no one knows how to properly treat, care (and care for) store and properly handle a weapon.

Think small... buy a cheap .22 Cal rifle. They can be had for $100, with a hundred rounds of ammo going for about $4. Learn how to sight, fire, and properly care for the weapon. Then get a pistol. At the hunter safety course, you should be told how to acquire pistol permits. Typically local adult education courses (likely taught right at your high school) will have courses regaurding permits.

A .38 is a good starter pistol. I had a .38 S&W Snub nose first. I graduated to a Colt Python (.357 Mag) and finally to a Colt Anaconda (.44 Mag) which was a monster. Now, I have an old Colt MK Vi .45 military pistol, reserved for home defense. I had a Desert Eagle, Thompson Contender, Walther PPK, and an S&W .44Mag as well. I never liked the automatics, they always jam up. The hotter they get, the worse they are at accuracy and jamming. I found Revolvers to be more attractive, accurate, and considerably more reliable than automatics.

I prefer rifles. They are more accurate, less fatiguing, more useful, better looking, and simply more fun to shoot. Not to mention, laws regaurding their posession and use are simple compared to pistols.

if you have never shot before a Dessart Eagle is WAY too much for you....

Like Seath Said get use to Rifles first..

start with a 22cal and work you way up..

I started Shooting 22 when I was 11 years old..

Best Gun I ever Shot was a SKS

Why do yu want a Dessart Eagel anyway, that is ALOT of firepower

Figure on spending somewhere from $300-1000 bucks for a decent pistol.

I didn't like my Desert Eagle. It felt cheap, for an $800 pistol. I like the feel of a revolver. Go to a local gunshop and heft the weapons, get a feel for them, and you will see what I mean.

I want to Expand my Thought a little

if you looking for a all around useful gun I do recommend a 9mm.. they are cheap, reliable and the ammo is also cheap

they are made in every style from small compact to large, every finsh from Black to Gold

However I do think you should get some Training on Rifiles and Shotguns, and safty/car

aslo for IN HOME defense the best is a Short Barrel Shot gun (shortest allowed by law in your state) with a Small Shot,

with a High Power Pistol or refile the Chances of "through wall travel" is great. putting everyone in your home.building in danger inadvertatly

with a Shot Gun the rage for a lethal hit is much lower, which is fine inside the home...

you need to determin what your purpose for the gun is and then decide which to get

dont pick one that "looks cool" or "has the most power" that is a bad way to pick a gun

in closing one of the guns I wish I could get is

    http://www.armalite.com/sales/catalog/rifles/ar50.htm

I just want it.. I have not Purpose for it, probally would never even shoot it,  :p

look at what is comes with

    COMPLETE WITH: OWNERS MANUAL
    LIFETIME WARRANTY
    TYLENOL
    EAR PLUGS

    ROFL

I want a gun to go to the range with and practice my shot. I think it will be a new hobby for me, along with the many others.

I use to do alot of Long Range Target Shooting. nothing with that kind of Power though normally 7.62 which is the prefered caliber for Snipers anyway.

but that rifile with the Right Scope and Right Shooter could hit targets 1-2 miles away B) B) B)

Being on an audio forum, and from my background and concerns....

    [note]
I should just point out that if you're going to be shooting guns, be prepared to lose some of your hearing. Wear good ear plugs (properly) as well as the ear muffs for best protection. This will help, but not fully block out all the damaging noises from your ears... so some damage will inherently occur. Effects will show up over the long term, so don't think it won't happen if in the first few times you go shooting, your ears are still fine.
    [end of note]

    Happy shooting!

    Good point about the noise...

Good questions with regard to the legal issues / registration / etc.

    So, I ask the obvious...

Why not start with a BB rifle?
I've shot those, and they are fun to set cans up on a fence or something in in a field... go way back, and shoot them off.
    Or set up targets, etc.

BB rifles are cheap, relatively quiet, and don't require any considerations with regard to registration (at least not in NY, I'd bet that holds true for the rest of the country).

I'd do that, then graduate up to a "real" gun after that...
But if you aren't hunting, where you need that real power, I'd even stick with the BB gun personally. B)

    Sure, there's no high-caliber / faux-military "bad-ass" factor...
But believe me, you won't pick up ANY chicks by showing her that you own high-caliber weapons... believe me of that...

what that was suppose to say was

"they will come in handy when G.W.Bush is Reelected in November which will cause the Next World War, That war will more than Likely lead to the Attempted invasion of the USA, and since our Armed Forces are Spread across soo many Fronts in the soo called "war on terror" we will be left with one choice, to defend ourselves, which will require GUNS......"

    EDIT
    CIVIC96

I took the leisure of making your second attempt readible. Had to fix lots of careless mistakes that completely made words unrecognizable. hehe, you welcome...I know I know, Im terrible

    A. Bush will not be reelected
    B. Even if he is, the possibility of a third world war during his 4 years is trivial

Out of curiousity, who do you think will be in this war?

Russia will not interfere, neither will china. Those are the only real threats in terms of man power. And lets be honest, no one will be using nukes, they are more a symbolization of power than power itself. Im talking about nations here, not crazy terrorist groups.

I just re-read what you wrote and it is absolutetly absurd. I think Bush is a plague for our country, but the chances of that happening are so small I would be willing to put my testicles on the line for the bet.

russia China and the EU will make up 1/2 of the World War

it will be those 3 with the Exception of the UK which will be thrown out of the EU (alreayd talks of this exsist) Agaist USA, Canada, and the UK

    and we will lose

and the Chances are Greater they you think, read some glable Papers, not the Government Controled american Media and you will get a better pricture

as far as Bush Being Reelected, Lastest Polls have him at 55% for Reelection..

if kerry get the Demo Canadt Apponment Bush will be reelected
