Well I have been tossing around an idea. It is butt cold up here in Minnesota, and it makes a person very inventive on how to keep warm. I was thinking of putting a solar panel in the rear window of my truck. This solar panel would put out up to 16v at around 4 amps and up to 15 watts of power. If I hook that up to a small deep cycle battery, (like a lawn mower battery) I could then hook up a very small DC heater to the battery. I would obviously have the heater in a spot where even if it did overheat it wouldn't burn up anything. I could then leave the heater on all day while I am at work or class and come back to a "warmer" vehicle. I know that by no means would this keep my truck at a warm room temp but would at least keep my truck interior above freezing when it is -5 degrees outside. Some more pluses would be that I wouldn't be remote starting my vehicle and wasting gas, and I also wouldn't be draining my trucks starter battery either. What do you guys think about this? Do you think this is a good idea?
Where do you live in Minnesota?? Sounds like a good idea. The one question i have is would the cost of the equipment be low enough to overcome the cost of the gas? It would be really nice if it worked though. Maybe you could make a bed topper out of solar panels. that would give you more power. You could hook the remote start up to it and turn it on when you wanted to.
-5 that is HOT I would be jumping in (insert name of any body of water near you) for a skinny dip GO POLAR BEARS
That was -5 without the windchill factor, with windchill about -20...OUCH!! The equipment would be a little expensive, but come on, it would be so cool to be able to just jump into the car and have it nice and warm, without wasting gas. The cost of the equipment would probably even out after about 3 years...oh well. Oh, and evoInfinity, I live in the twin cities and River Falls Wisconsin where I go to school.
