I've never installed any type of audio, but I want to give it a try. I've got one of the simplest installs I think you can have so I figure this is the place to start. This is all having to do with a 2001 Silverado. The current radio is a work truck special. It's got AM/FM cassette. Of course the cassette doesn't work. This is my father's truck and my Christmas present to him will be a new CD player in his truck. I wanted to go Delco because he's not real good with technology. Stock means simple in most cases so that's what I wanted. I picked up this stock CD player for $50 on craigslist. I had to find one that had the CD part on top since the trucks with center consoles and buckets have the CD below the dash. Anyways, I was wondering about install. Here's some questions: 1) I know I need to get the trim piece (radio bezel) removed in order for the old radio to come out. How should I do this? Are there screws to take out? I don't want to snap the trim piece, so are there any tricks to getting that piece off? 2) Once I get the trim piece off, I have been told I will need to unscrew the mounting brackets to release the old radio. Is this correct? 3) I'm almost sure this will be plug and play, so all I need to do is unplug the wires coming out of the stock unit and plug them into the CD player? 4) The mounting brackets should be interchangable, correct? I'll have more questions I'm sure.
it that radio you plan to buy is also from a silverado then it should fit without any problems meaning it will be plug and play. If it's not for a silverado then that will be a different story. 1. to remove the stereo put the steering wheel down as far as it can go, do the same with the shifter and firmly pull the dash off (it should be just clips), working from one side to the other. Snap it back on the same way. I tried looking for step by step instructions but i couldn't come up with anything 2. there will probably be 4 screws hold the bracket on, just remove the screws. and it should come out. 3. you have to make sure that the stereo you are buying is compatible with the with the old. if it is then everything should be easy, just simply unplug the old stereo and plug the new one in. 4. if the stereo you plan to buy is for the silverado then the bracket should be interchangable. If you run into any problems along the way, just let us know.
you may end up needing to go to the dealer if the theft code pops up. should be a simple swap. 7mm socket should unscrew the 4 mounting bolts.
Thanks for the help guys. It came out of an '02 Silverado, going to be installed in an '01. cccullen--how should I remove the radio bezel? I mean, I know I need to pull it off, but how? Just pull? Do I need to get something under it to get it started? I think (even with my almost non-existant audio skills) I will be able to swap the radio itself. The problem is getting the bezel off.
look all around the general area for any screws or clips. try to see if you need to remove some layers of the dash as well.

Just be sure to keep the original deck, chevy has the uncanny idea that they should never be touched, so if you wind up with engine error codes later down the line you will need the original head unit to clear them... (or maybey that was only on more recent trucks... i forget what year it was LMAO)
Engine error codes? As in Check Engine Soon? I'm trying to sell the original deck (although that might be tough as it's just AM/FM because the cassette doesn't work). CES doesn't bother me because it's on a lot in this truck for no apparent reason. I've had it scanned and came up with stupid stuff (emission codes) even though it's already been e-tested and passed with flying colors. Thanks again guys.
80% of CES codes are emissions lol, thats pretty much what that light means, but as far as other registry codes, like diag stuffs, idk, i was always told anything over 2000 in chevy, to keep the original deck. i'd hit a chevy forum and ask around they would know better than I, ive only done a couple installs on Silverados/colorados, iam far from pro.
if it hasn't giving him any problems so far then i don't think he'll have any problems in the future. that's just my opinion though.
