Let me give you my scenario. Very few rattles right now. I hear the drone, echos of my exhaust coming through the back wall. All stock speakers on my extended cab will be replaced, an eventually get my two subs under my rear back seat. All I want is to have my speakers sound alot better, better lower tones, an vocals. I have so far 12 feet of Dynamat Extreme, two quarts of Edead v.3 to lather over the mat, an have Second Skin's Luxury Liner on the way for the back wall. How much more mat do you really think someone needs to get thier doors speakers just to play louder? I was thinking of dividing the mat I have now for all four doors, an get some more. I'll be taping, covering all the holes that are not needed on the doors with a plastic liner, an then coating them with liquid dampener. I'm thinking maybe another 2-3 ft of mat on each door an I should be fine. An at the end, brush on some liquid dampener on the inside of the trim pieces. What do you think?
Adding to the question I originally asked. I've read the whole article that was by Don, "Sound Deadener Showdown" an I had got some really good information from it. But , being that it's been about three years since he originally posted the article- is SecondSkin's products still the best out there? Has any of the other companies re-invented thier old stuff, with a much better product- an you have a success story? Any cheap brands that do good on vertical installations? SS's dampening mats are alot better priced than Dyna***, but for what I'm planning on doing, would it even be worth it?
thats alot of sound dampening! id say thats enough but i dont have much experience with it. im gonna have to though cause im gonna have REALLY loud exhaust.
Well I bit the bullet an ordered up the last of my sound deadener. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm looking to address air borne noises more than structural vibrations. So I ended up opting for some mass loaded vinyl that I stumbled upon while doing some more searching tonight. Very good prices. Don't know how this brand compares to other mass loaded vinyl/foam liners made especially for automotive use, but it looks pretty dang close. An it weights in about 1lb per SF, nice! For 22 SF, a tube of acoustic sealant(seal the edges), and shipping to CA- it came out to about $67 bucks. Yet, I still honestly don't want to recommend this stuff yet without seeing how it works for me first. I'm going to e-mail the company as well an explain what I'm using it for, an see what they have to say. If I get a good response from them, I'll post the website than.
so all this is just to make the cabin more quiet to hear your music better? post some pics of your install too if possible
No problem. I'll see if I have time to start laying down the Dynamat atleast this weekend. The back is already gutted. I'll get some progress pics, an do some knocking test vids before and after demonstrating whether this "sheet" made any difference at the end(or enough). Trial an error. I also sent out a e-mail to the company were I got this MLV. Lets' see what they got to say.
believe me, it will make a huge difference... i just put some acoustic foam on my ceiling in my expy and it made the cabin so much more quiet. i didn't even deaden the floor or tailgate.
