They still remain the only component set that I have heard in person, that would trade my JL XR's for...

But for the difference in price, I would still take my JL's every time!

The GTi's are literally twice the price, at the local shops around here... right around $300 for the JL XR's, exactly $600 for the GTi 6.5's!

I enjoyed auditioning them more than any other speaker I have auditioned.. and I was just playing with them on the demo wall!

What kind of power can they handle?

Well, I know I could get JL's for less than $300 too.. on the web...
Those were prices from reasonable authorized dealers in my area...
Retail prices are MUCH higher - $700 for the GTi's!

I wouldnt' hesitate to go with EITHER the JL's or the GTi's...

Because of the large price difference, and extremely subtle sound difference between the two sets (IMO), I would go JL every time, personally..
I can't say enough good things about my JL's, seriously, I feel like an endorser...
The technology is there, they were designed by a very famous german engineer (of MB-quart high end fame), and most importantly the end result yields high performance in every area, seriously...

    The JL's or the GTi's?

My JL XR's are rated at 70 RMS... but JL is so ultraconservative with their power ratings as to practically be lying, I seriously wouldn't feel bad about taking their max-power ratings (140) and using that as my RMS.. being careful of course...

I currently have 120 going to mine and they take it like I was running them off a head unit...
I was thinking about upgrading my amp to a 175x2 Cadence, and I wouldn't even hesitate to run them on that (again, carefully!)..

The JBL GTi's are some extreme speakers... I think their max power rating is way up at 700 watts or something!! If I remember right, the RMS on those guys is 200...
But what makes them good isn't the powerhandling... it's the detail, they are a very nice sounding set.

if you're still around i have a wild card to throw into the mix...

2 way cdt hd's (6.5s) that can be had for 275
    3 ways...probably around 350

how would you compare the hd's to the other two, if you've heard them...or anyone else

well when i was in kansas City for the usac world finals i got to demo the new infinities then the new gti and all that good stuff and when all said and done when everyone trying to make there stuff sound the best in there demo vehicles the gti came out on top for me. they sounded great. and yes they are pricy but they are worth it.:)

I haven't been able to hear any CDT's... I have tried! No dealers anywhere around here...
Especially the European press, have given all CDT products I have ever read up on great reviews...
Personally I would probably do the CDT HD set with the deluxe silk tweeter setup.

I am generally opposed to 3-ways...
Not that I am opposed to a separate midbass...
But if I desired that, I would run a 5.25" component set, on an amp that was well matched to it...
And separately run a 6.5" or 8" midbass set, running off their own dedicated amp/channels (hopefully with a little higher power potential).

THAT would allow you to manage the balance of midrange to midbass...
One gain control would allow you to attenuate the comp set, the other to attenuate the midbass, individually..
In addition, you could be using the amp's adjustable crossovers to set your Xover point wherever your heart desires.

The reason that I want all this control is because of all the phasing, sound quality and imaging degradation issues that are suddenly thrust upon you when you are talking about three speakers to mount per side...
Three distinct pathlengths.. the farther the speakers are apart from each other, the worse the phasing issues are going to be at the crossover frequencies...
And the less ideal your locations are, the imaging and sound quality will suffer for that speaker's entire range.

It's much easier, from an install standpoint, to get a speaker and a tiny tweeter aimed and imaging properly than it is to try to get two large speakers (and a tweeter) mounted in a way that allows for proper imaging!

    the old K.I.S.S. rule! ;)

Unless you have taken a sawzall to your doors (like I did to my truck! :D), this might - just from an installation standpoint - be prohibitive!

very very very true geo...and to think that's EXACTLY i mean EXACTLY what me and blkx were discussing on aim with a separate midbass.....i like ya style....thanks for saving me the trouble....i think i'll go with what you said and hopefully down the road add a separate midbass.....we shall see.....i may just give in to the 3 ways since cdts are supposed to have killer midbass anyways...but the controls like you said....hmmm
