First and foremost I would like to welcome myself back to the forum. It is an unfortunate admission of human nature that it took a tradgedy for me to come back on board, but regardless, I am here and proud. :D

Now to the point at hand. I was taking a turn perhaps a little too quickly in order to make a light and my sub box ripped loose and hit the front of my trunk with a nice loud thump. I have 1 12" IDMAX and the box slid from the back left side of the trunk to the right front and hit at an angle that I dont believe physically touched the subwoofer. The subwoofer still works but it feels like its on power save mode, only hitting at about 50%. The bass doesnt feel as punchy and I noticed that on some beats where there used to be big bass there is now a background murmur at best. If I crank up the volume the bass still gets loud but its not the same bass I have grown to love. I think something came loose, any ideas? Is there any hopes that it will come back to life or is this what I get for being an idiot?

This has turned into more of a rant than an inquiry but advice is still appreciated,
    Thanks!

is your box damaged??? output and clarity can be reduced from air leaks...and from this wreck you describe there may be some box damage.

Just take em out and check the inside of the box and the subs...those subs are pretty stout so I don't think there is any sub damage

Obviously the box damage would be noticeable to the naked eye, but will damage to the sub be as apparent? I neglected to mention that this is not the first time the box has slid across the trunk, this has however, been the most violent. This is what I get for being lazy and not taking care of problems when they arise. Lesson learned...

*Edit*- I tried to log onto caraudioforum and surprise surprise, the website is down. SOMETHINGS NEVER CHANGE. lol

is the sub a duel coil?maybe 1 of the coils is unplugged?

The magnet may have come dislodged from the from the frame slightly which would allow the voice coil to be out of alignment. Pull the driver from the box, and carefully move the cone forward and back, feeling for any oddities in its movement.

Otherwise...???????? Is it a vented box??? If so is the port lying in the box? that would mistune it seriously and not allow the lower registers to be reproduced.

yeah what kind of box is it? A sealed box could easily been messed up to where its leaking air... push the cone in and see if it returns immediatly.. if not.. its not sealed anymore.

The sub is sitting in a smalled 1.1 cu ft box. As I was driving this morning I noticed that the sub still has punch, its just hitting at about 75%. The lower frequencies that arent punchy, but tend to rattle your gut are basically gone. You can hear them as a background buzzing at best. Thanks for the advice Dave, I will check that out.

*Edit*- I pushed in the cone about an inch or so and it just took its sweet little time popping back out. I wouldnt say it popped out, it was more of a steady snail's pace.

    Leak in box?

Definitely a leak...if the box was sealed than it would push right back basically instantly and would have more pressure when pushing in on the cone

Assuming I find the leak, will caulk do the job? I am not sure whether the presence of that stuff will somehow affect the sound. I am also beginning to think that there was an air leak in that box for quite some time. I remember pushing the cone in before and having similar results. Im sure this incident was the coup de grace, though.

I dont remember how much i paid for the sub when I bought it from Sounddomain but it goes for $450 now. I must have been crazy to spend that much money on it, and furthermore, I think I need to invest in a much better security system. Im thinking flame throwers....

First and foremost, pretty much ALL encolusres will never be 100% airtight. This is especially true with enclsures the are prefabbed. MDF, Particle board LEAK AIR!!!!! This type of wood is NOT airtight!!!!!!

Then we can look at the driver, the driver itself may have some naturally occuring air leaks, the surround, the cone itself, the frame to box clearance.

What i am saying is that Most speakers, when pushed into the box, then released, will indicate an air leak. Again, especially true on prefab enclosures.

unless you build an airtight enlcosure and seal the basket and the only leaks can be the sub itself...lol

Maybe, you just ''THINK'' the sub or box is broken. It could be all in you're head just cause a box shifts during a turn and flips or whatever, don't mean anything. Unless it falls on a pointed object then that would raise concern...:D

Trust me, there is an audible difference. I immediately noticed it after I heard the box hit the trunk. At first I thought the wires disconnected from the box but after inspection that was clearly not the case. I know how the bass used to sound on the songs I listened to, and its safe to say that it lost power and that some frequencies are not even being played.
