Friend of mine has an Alpine HU that is a couple years older model....

I have been talkin to him about getting my stuff in my truck and how I'm gonna do it....He has heard my truck (right now it sounds decent even considering this....Factory front and rear speakers that crackle and buzz at certain times and my sub has about 200 watts going to it) and thought it sounded damn good.....Now he has another buddy who had left a sub box, subs, amp & cap at his house for a while....He told him a couple of weeks ago that he would sell it to him for $350.00....It has two 10" MTX subs and an MTX amp and some kind of cap....He tells me he is gonna put it in his car to enhance the bass......I talk to him the other day and he said his kid put it in and did a super job....Real clean and only one wire showing (I am a stickler about wires...Don't want to see them if I can avoid it)

Yesterday, he flips open the trunk to show it off....Amongst all the junk in his trunk I see the box sitting there with subs facing rear...Coming up on the trunk support/hinge on the passenger side is an orange extension cord...Ends are cut off and two conductor wires are out, stripped and placed under one of the mounting bolts....I ask what that is and he tells me it is the ground for the amp and the cap....It dissapears around the box (this is the one wire that is showing, he mentioned)...He opens the car and flips the back of the rear seats down...There is the amp....Speaker wire, and all other wires appear to have a few feet extra and they are just kinda spooled around themselves...I see the other end of this 20' extension cord attatched to the cap...Interesting....I thought.....

So I get in the car and he starts it up and fires up the stereo....I give him a Sublime CD that I had and he puts it on track 3...This song (those of you who don't know) has a really good solid kick sound and a really cool bouncy bass line that will show off mid bass and low bass....Sublime's drums are tight and crisp sounding and guitars are clean too......Now what I hear coming out of this car is low bass notes hit and drown out most of everything else...I cannot even hear the highs of the drummers hi-hat....I listen close, but hear nothing coming from the front of the car, just the rear...Where is that tight kick drum?? Gone....what about that nice crisp guitar?? Gone....When the low bass notes hit, they appear to be about 12 db above the rest of the mix...My buddy looks over at me and smiles....He asks me don't I think it sounds good? Nice and clean....The cap really helps out, he says.....I just smile and say, "yeah, sounds pretty good"......Later on he is telling me that he has not tweaked anything on the EQ yet, just put it in and pushed play...No gain settings on the amp, no nothing (been in his car for about a week now)....He said "give me a couple of weeks and I will have this baby really dialed in" .....He tells me "yeah, I think it rocks and the rear 6x9's are two different brands".....

This guy is a musician and has a great guitar sound and little studio in his garage...I cannot believe he even thinks this sounds good, but we drive away rockin down the road.....

Finally I get back to my truck, slip the disc in my player and ENJOY my drive home....

    Yeah.....Really under sized......

In my opinion, I don't blame someone for using cheap gear or buying something that is not up to par so to speak (not saying his stuff is cheap), but running things that way just don't make sense......Use appropriate stuff, even if it is inexpensive...Do it neatly and cleanly and correctly.....

I cannot imagine hooking stuff up and not touching any of the levels or controls for over a week....He never even knew how the EQ worked untill he downloaded the manual for the HU on-line to get directions on setting the clock....When I saw that orange extension cord, I just thought "what the hell??" and why run it around across the trunk and up on to the freakin hinge (a piece that moves).....Looked kinda like a rat's nest.....sloppy, half-assed..

Sounds like your buddy will be lucky if his car does not catch fire.............you may want to do him a favor and warn him, and reccomend some fuses here and there if not already in place

Yeah that extension cord isn't made to carry much current...well not enough for an amplifier.

That is why I said half-ass.....That speaks of the person who installed.....

I consider someone who does it wrong and knows better to be stupid....Someone who does it wrong and does not know better is ignorant...
His son installed (he is 15) and he just does not know better...My buddy knows better...He works at an auto parts store....Even if it is generic wire (absolutley nothing wrong with that) he has access to it and get it for cost and I am sure that is pretty inexpensive....

One of my cousins actually had a piece of plywood sitting at a 45 degree angle in the back seat of a mazda....On this piece of plywood was about 4 sets of speakers...The plywood was not secured or nothing, just sittin there with all these various speakers mounted to it....He had a dash EQ and every freq was pushed up to full gain.....he thought it was cool.......Probably had nothing below 400hz in the car, but he thought it was cool.

ok got another one.same guy.got rid of the home speakers only to put some 6x9's on the rear shelf.

they were not secured in any way.hits the brakes and they both come flying forward.the passenger side speaker slams into the dash and the drivers side hits the back seat.

lucky...you bet.after that did he learn a lesson.no.he just put them on the back seat.with duct tape.lol
