Ok, so i finally got around to hooking my sub up. Its an audiobahn alum12x with an aluminum cone. I have all the settings on my amp set to real low. As I don't like big boomy sloppy, I like quick tight bass. I dont hear the rattle except when I open the trunk and look at the sub....its almost as if there is a tiny pebble that the cone is pushing everytime it hits. I dont see a problem and I dont turn it up louder than maybe 22 of 30 on my HU with no boost from my unit as well. Is it normal for aluminum cones to sound like this? This is my first setup and I have no experience with other cones.

Not at all... those should be mechanically pretty quiet drivers.

    What are the install specifics?

I had a buzzy rattly type of sound with my fiberglass box before I went through and trimmed/glued down all of my loose strands. Have you pulled your sub to see if there might be something loose inside the box?

Its in a .88 sealed box. The box is very solid. Texcon actually made it. I filled it with polyfill and just installed the sub, so Im positive nothing is inside the box. Someone suggested the tinsel lead is broken..since this is my first install, I didnt notice anything wrong with the sub when installing. Would this effect performance?

If it's *broken* then the sub wouldn't work at all. It could be slapping against the cone, though.

the sub plays fine. its just the little rattle when you are right next to it or tuning the amp .... cant hear it anywhere else.

if it is a tinsel lead slapping the cone, be VERY cautious!
That's a metal cone... think of the consequences if BOTH leads tapped the cone at the same time: there would be a short circuit, 0 ohms of resistance for your amplifier - potentially, IT could die. And while manufacturers warranty their own products, your amp manufacturer will not honor a warranty for damage caused by shorting the speaker terminals, even if it was not really your fault... and good luck getting Audiobahn to pay for it.
So - make sure that it isn't tinsel lead slap!

I'd remove the sub from the box, and possibly temporarily mount it inverted. Then, run the sub and listen for the noises, and find out where they are coming from, specifically.
It's not something that you want to mess around with!

I'd like to renege this statement and amend it with:

If it has more than one coil and you're running any of the coils in parallel then it could be one of the tinsel leads is completely broken and whacking around while the other coil is still operating, so my earlier statement could have been misleading.

This weekend I had the pleasure(?) of watching a guy take apart an ID Max to discover one tinsel lead was completely broken off at the coil so it was making a nasty clicking/tapping/rattling sound, but since he had them in parallel the subs were still working (two subs, both with the same problem). He's had issues with his amps going into protect, so we assume this very well could have been the problem.

hate to say ti but sealed and audiobahn subs dont go well together

I have a feeling your problem is lead slap

but watch tghe top plate as well they have a tendancy to come unglued, easy to fix though

I have no idea what I am looking for. The sub looked good an solid with nothing rattly when i put it in the box... i really dont know how to explain the sound well so i could be misleading you all as well.

It kind of sounds like i was eating a cracker over the sub, and a tiny piece landed on top of the cone, and i can hear it bouncing around... not necessarily when it hits, but just throughout an entire song.

ps. michael, what movie is that forgiveness qoute from... i seen it recently but can't think of it.
