I wouldn't say I'm old enough to remember that, but I did own an Alpine 7909 that was a pullout.

That sucks about the CD player Michael. I've only had one cd player go kaput on me (the 7909), but atleast I was able to sell the broken unit for $450 :D .

I had a few of them... I remember walking through the mall carrying mine thinking "how cool am I?"

Hehehehe... I remember when FM radios were options and there wasn't such a thing as digital controll radios... Big old push buttons that stuck out an inch, you pushed them in with a loud "cha-gunk"... to set them you selected the station (Via a dial) and pulled them out, then pushed them in...

    Anyone remember 8-tracks

Hmm... Can't be all that old if I remember those things... I even had them in my second car! :p

The car was older than me tho...

Dude, my dad has a 1971 Ford Ranger with the original AM radio - it has the huge push-in buttons for the stations with 2 fat knobs for the volume and tuning. He also used to have an 8-track player in his old Toyota. What a trip that thing was.

They do have arguably the best SQ of any analog medium ;)

How do 8 tracks and reel-to-reel compare in SQ?

whoah.. how did we stray from changing a laser in a jvc hu to pondering the sq of a reel-to-reel? The sad thing is that I know a little something about every single post.. transmissions- yes they can be very finicky, I had an olds 442 that liked to puke parts quite often. I had to buy three trannies for it before i got a good one. Lasers aren't that hard to replace, if you have the right tools, the problem is that some electronics companies like to glue the ribbon cables on (communists). Most cd players I've seen are not direct drive, they are run by indirect drive with the use of a rubber belt and pulleys (because they spin such high rpm). try to find a replacement belt- nearly impossible! When I was in high school, I built an eight track player from a kit, and I was so hype that I finished it, but the only 8 track cassette that I could find was kenny rogers (what a buzzkill!), It worked perfectly but kenny made it suck until I finally found a black sabbath cassette!:D Yes, I had a sony pullout cassette deck complete with canvas carrying case, and beleive me, I thought that I was a pimp. hell, now all of my HU's are detatch face, and I don't even bother removing them:huh: Gotta love car alarms! and, oh yes! (this post is not only making me feel old, it's also making me feel like I have ADD...) My dad had a reel-to-reel player when I was a kid.. he was an old school audiophile. From what stuff that I read from the hardcore quys that still use them, there is nothing else that even comes close (I like cd's, and mp3's - it's a whole lot easier to keep track of your collection!). - wow, what a blast from the past. oh, I used to work with an older gentleman who actually had an under-dash turntable in his buick, and not for 45's, it was for 78's! I feel even older now, just for saying turntable. - sorry about the rant.

(anyone ELSE old enough to remember the pullout units that predated detatchable faces? )

I Had one in my 1968 Coupe DeVille! I thought it was a great idea because in theory I could move it from car to car just by buying more slide-in chassis. Of course I never did do that, but it was a good thought.
