hey, be careful of what you are doing lol, you are in danger land.. Ranger haha
Seriously i wouldn't mess with the boot screens, if something happens to that pic or the boot.ini file then your screwed then the computer won't start at all. There is a program that does it but i wouldn't use it. It's not worth it.

This is not what i used to use but is similar, i used style xp and another but can't find it now.

    Change XP Boot Screen

You two could have told me this sooner!!!!!!!!! I did these mods on my laptop, no problem. So I tried the same mod on the computer at work. CRASH.

Lucky I set a restore point prior to the change. Booted in safe mode and everything is as is.

Why does the mod work on one computer and not another. The only difference (other than brand) is that mine has Service Pack 3, the one at work has Service Pack 2. Both are XP Home.

I'll have to look at this some more.

    Thanks Guys

OK I will quit messing with Boot Screens tomorrow. But I had to know how to make one.

What do you think of this one

electrolytic, thanks for that link, but the boot skin program seems to slow down the boot time. I tryed it and ended up not liking it.

There is a good set of instructions at www.theeldergeek.com that was pretty good. I did do a bit of research and no I have not changed the Boot Screen on my desktop. Its my main machine, the laptop is my toy.

you can completely get rid of the explorer.exe shell for windows and basically make everything totally different. takes some getting used to.

Are we talking about the same thing, explorer.exe located in the SYSTEM32 folder is absolutely necessary. In fact Windows will not work without it. Its so important that Windows has a back up of it (located in SYSTEM32/NTOSKRNL.exe), so that it can be restored or fixed if something happens.

This back up file also has to be changed.

And he is 100% right. The final mods are done in Safe Mode with Command Prompt. When you get to this point you better be right.

I've done this 3 times and in one instance the computer crashed.

Lucky I made a back up of the original files and was able to boot in safe mode.

    DO NOT delete explorer.exe.
Windows should automatically restore this file on reboot if its deleted, but lets not test that feature.
