Does anyone on here know a decent amount about viruses/adware. I am having some serious problems on one of my computers, and I need some advice before I pay someone to come and fix my problem (and they always recommend re-formatting the hard drive... Normally I find out after the fact that the re-format was not needed)

go to www.downloads.com and download the freewares "Adware" and "Spybot Search and Destroy". Immediately do the updates. Then run the programs and immunize on Spybot. If that doesn't work, try downloading "Registry Mechanic" (the free version works just fine). If you still have a problem, hit "ctrl/alt/delete" and write down your open programs. Add them to this thread. I have had issues both at home and at the shop.

Finally, when all is cleared up, download Mozilla Firefox and use it as your browser. I have found I have considerably less issue with spyware since I began using it.

Registry Mechanic? I have spy-bot, and Ad-Aware, and Norton. None of them seem to be working. I get the same 7 viruses everyday, and I have to delete them about 3 times a day. It makes my computer freeze. I can restart the computer and it will run fine for about 30-45 minutes, and then it will sort of freeze. I can click on the programs, and they will highlight, but will never open. I can open the start menu, but only the few icons at the top will come up (the shortcuts to certain programs). What do you mean write down the programs? It shows that I have none open. Do you mean to write down the processes (I am running Windows XP, if that helps or changes anything). I have tried everything, from running Norton, then Spy-Bot, then Ad-Aware, back to back, and all that happens is the computer will still crash.

Yeah, processes in the system category.

Have you updated your windows lately? I suggest setting it to auto update, and perform all updates applicable to your system as well.

the virus have probally written themselfs towhere they can not be deleted by windows

Norton will tell you whether the Delete with Successful or not.. as well and quarntine

when norton Give you a List, either right down or Print out the file locations, then have wondow restart to a DOS command Promopt and Delete those files.

but make sure they are not, repeat, NOT need system files that have been corrupted...

Another problem is that if the Virus Program is Currently Running it can not be Deleted by Windows, if this is the case press "ctrl alt del" (win XP or win2000 only) and look for the Process accosiated with that virus (again norton will tell you that) and "shut down" that process , then have norton try and Delete it

In the Future scan all, ALLLLLLLLL files downloaded off the net BEFORE you open them

Have you updated the virus defs for Symantec? If not, you can delete those files all day, but norton probably isn't finding everything. That means that the main virus files aren't being detected, just the files created by it are.
This might be a little late, but I worked for McAfee tech support for a long time. If you're still having problems, I might be able to help. If anyone is interested in a free full copy, PM me, I still have the info.

I finally figured out the problems... I had a whole lot of viruses, and a whole lot of adware, and the adware had taken over the computer using 100% of the CPU usage, that is why it was freezing
