Hey all,

This weekend I am going to begin finishing the mains. You may recall I completed the center last weekend. I decided to let the mahogany age some more in the sun to darken for the mains, particularly since I will definately not be using a grille on them.

Background. The mains are KIT81s in 35L tuned to 32.5Hz. The port is of the flared variety and a monsterous 3 inches in diameter. They are obviously floorstanders and get down low very easily. I mildly tweeked the crossover to tame the tweeters a shade too. Center is a KIT81C that was mildly modified, both to fit the top of my TV better, and to bring the QTC of the enclosure a tad lower than Adire reccomended.

The veneer will be tiger mahogany, with detail work done in black walnut. To keep the edges perfectly clean, and to give the units a bit of charachter, I will be inlaying all edges with the walnut. The inlay will be done with a rough piece, glued to the cut out of the edge joint and trued with a router.

I will be leaving the wood natural, with laquer for protection. I am shooting for at least 14 layers of lacquer, with 5 or 6 of shelac as a wood sealer and good base coat. I am hoping for 1/8-1/4 of an inch thick on the lacquer. I will be compounding and buffing the product to a mirror shine.

Due to a rather high demand for a site detailing veneering, and piano finishes, I will be building a new tutorial (similar to the enclosure build tutorial I linked before) detailing the procedures. If you have any thoughts or ideas you want addressed in the tutorials, please feel free to list them here. I will try to cover everything, from parts list to clean up, to preferred materials, etc. Also it should be noted that the mains will be veneered with contact cement as it is my preferred method. I will, however, also address wood glue and clothing iron useage as well
