Faceplate Blues

About a year ago, I saved up to get a basic system for my old fox body convertible mustang. It had the stock system and as most of you probably know, the stock system in a 13 year old ford is not the best in the world.

Well fastforward a couple of years and I just got a 2000 mustang GT and I plan to transfer the whole system over to this car. I only have one minor cosmetic problem. The faceplate of my Sony Drive-S CDX-FW700 is brushed aluminum. WIth my new car I really don't want anything that sticks out quite that much and risks a breakin. (It really doesn't work with the tan interior anyway.)

Is it possible that some of the other Drive-S detachable faceplates would work with it? It was a $200 dollar player when I got it, and I don't want it to go to waste sitting in my old car. (I also have to be able to convince my dad that there is a way to do this since he's helping a 19 year old with insurance and car payments on a Mustang GT)

I would assume not, but if I'm wrong, I would be happy to be corrected on the matter.

If you are refering to the removable type face peice with all the controls and such, I did something years ago for a customer that wanted his radio to match the interior, now, mind you, this is radical and will pretty much eliminate all the original silk screening on the face plate...... I disassemble the entire face plate, pulled out all the electronics and such.....then redyed the housing that holds it all, including the buttons in a contrasting flat black, the trim ring, face plate (front and back) were dyed an odd looking grey to match the interior of his truck, a toyota if i remember right. He memorized all the essential controls so it was not tht big of an issue....... it looked rather "futuristic/military/plain".........I thought it looked OK, but not something I would want in my car.................just a little FYI for ya.

Yeah... I know about what you mean. Honestly, I have seen a few of my friends try the same thing and they swore they'd never try it again.

I really just wonder if the facepates are interchangeable. I think that it would have to be a very similar system, but I know a lot of the drive-s had the same wattage and most of the same features. I figured I could ebay the faceplate from one of the black sonys and stick it on there. Just don't want to waste my money on it unless I am sure it would work.
